Mass ratios in multiple star systems

چکیده

Recently a catalogue of 612 physical multiple stars was published by Tokovinin. The systems are generally hierarchical, i.e. they consist of binaries of different hierarchy levels. We have studied the mass ratios of the hierarchical binaries as a diagnostic of the origin of the multiple systems. The threebody statistical break-up theory is used to obtain likely mass ratio distributions in dynamically strongly interacting systems. A comparison with the catalogue data shows good agreement between theory and observations. This tells us that the multiple stars of the catalogue are not primordial but their properties are results of dynamical interactions where the three-body ejection process plays a key role.

Scaling relations in dynamical evolution of star clusters

We have carried out a series of small scale collisional N-body calculations of single-mass star clusters to investigate the dependence of the lifetime of star clusters on their initial parameters. Our models move through an external galaxy potential with a logarithmic density profile and they are limited by a cut-off radius. In order to find scaling relations between the lifetime of star cluste...

Mass Participation Factor in Defining Non-classical Range of Behavior for Mass Isolated Systems

The new techniques in seismic design of structures are usually attributed to high damping ratios. In such systems, the assumption of classical (i.e. proportional) damping is not valid and in most cases they should be considered as Non-classical systems. Since the analytical tools for studying the behavior of such structures are not easily available, the present work attempts to find the limits,...

Expected masses of merging compact object binaries observed in gravitational waves

We use the well tested StarTrack binary population synthesis code to examine the properties of the population of compact object binaries. We calculate the distribution of masses and mass ratios taking into account weights introduced by observability in gravitational waves during inspiral. We find that in the observability weighted distribution of double neutron star binaries there are two peaks...

The extrasolar system OGLE-2006-BLG-109L is the first multiple-planet system to be discovered by gravitational microlensing (Gaudi et al. 2008); the two large planets that have been detected have mass ratios, semimajor axis ratios, and equilibrium temperatures that are similar to those of Jupiter and Saturn; the mass of the host star is only 0.5M⊙, and the system is more compact than our own So...
